Top Ten Tuesday: Series I’ve Been Meaning To Start

The end of the school year caused my blogging to come to a pretty much complete standstill…and then summer happened and I haven’t gotten back around to being more consistent again. Here goes nothing! I’m so excited for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic. Top Ten Tuesday is a meme started by the bloggers @ The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there’s a different theme for a Top 10 list. This week’s theme is Top Ten Series I’ve Been Meaning to Start but Haven’t Yet. I’ve tackled a lot of series this year, including finally reading the Grisha Trilogy & the Six of Crows duology, as well as starting the Throne of Glass series, but there are still so many more I need to get around to! Without further ado, here are some of them (along with all known cover images for the series–thanks to Goodreads!)

1. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

I’ve been meaning to start this series for ages, and I even got a copy from my The Broke and the Bookish Secret Santa for Christmas…but I just haven’t gotten to it yet. I’m definitely one of those people where the second I own a book, the likelihood of me reading it quickly goes down. I did recently start the Throne of Glass series by the same author and really loved the first one, which gives me a little more drive to make it to this series as well. The series currently has 3 books, with 3 more expected.

2. Talon by Julie Kagawa

I’m currently reading Seraphina by Rachel Hartman, which is also about dragons. I’m eagerly looking forward to reading this series, too, as I’ve discovered I’m very intrigued by dragons. The series follows Ember, a teenage dragon just wanting to experience humankind before her destiny begins. She encounters a dragon hunter and makes him think second thoughts, etc. There are currently 4 books in the series & the 5th book is expected to come out next year.

3. Monsters of Verity by Victoria Schwab

While technically a duology, I’m definitely counting this for purposes of this list. I absolutely LOVED Schwab’s Darker Shade of Magic series and I’ve since made it a goal to gobble up everything else she’s put out. I have the first book of this duology, This Savage Song, but just haven’t gotten to it yet…obviously because I own it. Sigh. It’s on my summer reading list.

4. Arc of a Scythe by Neil Shusterman

Until I was going through my Goodreads to-read shelf for this list, I had no idea that the book Scythe was actually the first of a series of at least 2 books. I’ve been meaning to read it for awhile now. It follows two Scythe apprentices who don’t want the job. In their world, Scythes are the only means of population control, and the only means of death for other humans. The premise intrigued me, and I’m excited to know that there will be more, as I’ve heard nothing but good things about the initial book.

5. The Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz

This is a read I think will be dense, so I keep putting it off, but it keeps intriguing me regardless. The trilogy follows a Muslim family in Egypt over 50 years, beginning in the early 1900s, when Egypt was occupied by British forces. Some day, I’ll get here and I’m pretty sure I won’t regret it.

6. The Broken Earth by N. K. Jemisin

I’ve only read 1 N. K. Jemisin novel thus far and it was the first in the Inheritance Trilogy. I will eventually finish that series…but I also really want to read this one. Her writing style is amazing, and this series has just gotten so much acclaim.

7. For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund

This series starts with the title book, which is described on Goodreads as Persuasion by Jane Austen, but set in space. How could you not be drawn to that description (even if Persuasion is the least familiar of Austen’s novels to you)? It’s a duology, with a few prequels, and it’s long since been completed, so I hope to get around to reading it someday.

8. The Tribe by Ambelin Kwaymullina

This series starts with the book The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf, which follows a girl in a dystopian society captured from her tribe by an administrator who blocks her supernatural abilities and connects her to a machine that will pull her secrets out of her. It sounds intense, but intrigues me…and one reviewer on Goodreads pointed out that it’s based on Aboriginal beliefs (and the author also comes from an Aboriginal tribe). It looks interesting, and I’m always a fan of finding non-white protagonists in fantasy. It’s much needed.

9. Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

The title pretty much just describes why I’m interested. Pirates!

10. The Girl from Everywhere by Heidi Heilig

This series is about Nix, who lives on a ship with her father. The ship can go anywhere in space or time, as long as her father has a map (it’s like the TARDIS–but a ship!). However, amongst their adventures, her father’s one goal remains: find a map back to 1868 Honolulu & Nix’s mother–which might mean Nix would cease to exist. It just sounds so interesting!
